Psychotherapy Treatment

Psychotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of mental illness provided by a trained mental health professional.  Psychotherapy explores thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and seeks to improve an individual’s well-being. Jade provides individual, group, and family therapy to help patients eliminate or control disabling or troubling symptoms to increase functionality and overall quality of life, free from distress and impairment.

Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life; the impact of trauma, medical illness, the death of a loved one, workplace stress and challenges, family stress and challenges and specific mental disorders, such as depression or anxiety.

Value of Psychotherapy

Though their reasons for visiting a counselor may vary, Americans consistently indicate the experience was very positive (47%). Another 29 percent say it was somewhat positive (Barna Research). Additionally the survey found 42% of U.S. adults have seen a counselor at some point, while 36% are open to it.

Over the last decade however, the American Psychological Association reports psychotherapy has been in decline while the use of medications to treat mental and behavioral issues has increased.

“Every day, consumers are bombarded with ads that tout drugs as the answer to their problems. Our goal is to help consumers weigh those messages with research-based information about how psychotherapy can provide them with safe, effective and long-lasting improvements in their mental and physical health,” said Melba J. T. Vasquez, PhD, past president of the American Psychological Association.

The APA review project found while medication is appropriate in some instances, research shows that a combination of medication and psychotherapy is often most effective in treating depression and anxiety. It should also be noted that the effects produced by psychotherapy, including those for different age groups and across a spectrum of mental and physical health disorders, are often comparable to or better than the effects produced by drug treatments for the same disorders without the potential for harmful side effects that drugs often carry.
