What is Family Therapy and Why is it Important?

Family therapy interventions seek to treat a group or network of individuals who are affected by a issues specific to their family system. A family unit may comprise of two unmarried partners, a traditional nuclear family, a blended family, or a group of people who share a home and a strong emotional connection. Family therapy provides a neutral setting where members can talk openly and honestly about the variables that are affecting their lives. It also provides members the opportunity to talk about aspects of family life that may trigger unwanted behavior, such as marital conflict, teenage rebellion, or unemployment. The family therapist may arrange individual counseling sessions for each person in the household, sessions for the entire family unit, or both. The family may also be asked to participate in group meetings or outside support groups with other family members.

Highly Recommended

Interventions associated with Family Therapy have been shown to provide high benefits with low costs, and organizations including the National Institute on Drug Abuse and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that family therapy be incorporated into any substance abuse or mental health treatment program.
